2017 Travellers Series Round 1 - Eastbourne 4th March.

Post by Matt Riley » Thu Feb 02, 2017 12:01 am

Getting the new season underway, the NOR has been posted for the first round of the 2017 Travellers series at Eastbourne on the 4th March.

The hosts for the 2016 nationals are stepping up again to hold the first of this 8 event series and it is set to be a great event for blowing away a few cobwebs and getting everybody back into RG65 mode. Remember, the best 5 scores from this series go towards the selecting the winner of the 2017 RG65 UK Class Champion Trophy and last year consistency was the key to winning so it pays to get as many events under your belt as possible.

Link to the NOR and the online entry form is here For more details on the club go to edmyc.org.uk

2017 Travellers Series Round 1 - Eastbourne 4th March - Results

Despite forecasts of downpours, the weather held for the 18 sailors who turned up for the first Travellers Series events at the Eastbourne and District Model Yacht Club lake at Princes Park. After registration, a course was laid on the seaward side of the lake and sailing got underway with all 18 boats in a single fleet. The wind steadily increased over the day with some big shifts coming from the western end of the lake turning the longer beats into a bit of a gamble with the fleet splitting between staying close inshore and vanishing off into the middle of the lake.

At lunch Alex Corey had built up a lead with his new Scurry that he was going to keep for the rest of the day. The strengthening but fluky wind caused some dilemmas over rig choice with people swapping between A rigs, intermediate (low aspect A) rigs and B rigs as the gusts came and went. A few boats had some early season electrical glitches and there were a couple of breakages cause by overpowered boats nose-diving down wind, including Nigel Brown snapping the main sheet on his impressive metallic blue Scurry after the rig and hull tried to go in separate directions during a submarine excursion.

For the final races the wind got lighter, leading to a few more rig changes, but after 20 races, Alex had kept his form and came in with 27 points to Ken Binks on 69. Tobias Laux just took third on a count back from Phil Holiday, last years UK class Champion. the full results can be found at the Eastbourne website here

A big thanks to the Andrew Blagborough and the rest of the Eastbourne team for holding the event, suppling plenty of hot drinks and cake from the tea trolley and providing a very efficiently run days racing.

Next up for the Travellers series is the double header of rounds 2 and 3 at Weecher Resevoir in Yorkshire on the 22nd/23rd April, but remember, Birkenhead are starting their RG65 series on the 1st April, more details here
