Darin The position is reasonably covered in the MYA Yearbook. For National Championships there are regulations(quo
ted in the Yearbook) and reg 1.4 says if you enter you pay even if you don't compete. Forother events see "A guide to entering races" on page 40. Guidance is given but the decision is up to the club and the circumstances bearing in mind the club has got things organised in anticipation. It will be interesting to see what others say.

I have been asked by a few people recently about the "rules" for entry fees and returning them when someone cannot make an event. I have to say that my response has been a bit wishy washy and made up of my own views rather than what I have seen in writing. What are other's views on a sensible approach to entry fee payment and returning for non participation.F
or the record, my view would be that entry fees are due on entering but would be refunded if non participation is confirmed before the closing date for entries, any time after that and the club hosting the event would be entitles to keep the entry fee. What do others think?

That yellow A boat that I sailed in the Worlds in '95 has a bustle that I added to the hull. The boat has just undergone another series of changes to improve her including a better rudder so I can see if the steerability problem was caused by rudder stall. But she has always left a turbulent wake and the bustle is fairly wide because of the old thick rudder so I am also interested to see if the wake is better or worse because of the reduced thickness of the new rudder. If the steering is better and the wake the same or worse then maybe the bustle gets thinned down or otherwise reduced. Its an ongoing investigation.

Val,
yes that is what I am thinking of.
The theory must have worked in the tank or I doubt the boat would have been built. Maybe it works on model sizes but doesn't scale well.
I have photos of one 6m with that feature that is competitive
Tha

I think what you are talking about is the square back to the bustle. Theoretically if the boat sails fast enough the waterflow should leave the bustle cleanly but in Mariner's case it was overdone and tended to suck her to a stop. She had to have some major underwater surgery before she sailed well and given that our 6ms are very slow and are sailing in a medium of the same viscosity I doubt if it would benefit them at all. Some years ago I went to measure a full sized 6m with some extreme curvature around the bustle and under the stern. It looked very sexy and adventurous indeed and once sailing the boat was average upwind. However downwind was a different story as she peeled off round the buoy and then parked up while the rest of the fleet flew by her. So it was back to the shed and out with the saw while Dave Hollom got to work modifying her shape as designed by the original Naval Architect. The changes were so radical that I hardly recognised her on my return with tape measure and scales! But the result was that she went on to win the 6m Nationals in UK.

In about 1985 (after the 12 metre Mariner) I seem to remember seeing photos of a few boats that had a square cutoff underwater (stern). Hard to describe but Sylph and JSann designs seem to come to mind. May have been what was called the "shelf stern"Ps. its a while ago, the name Bill Green rings a bell

David, National Championships are recognised events within the MYA calendar, openi
